Spanish study article on tobacco and cholesterol as the main factors of the first heart attack
Two avoidable conditions that are behind the increase in heart attacks in people under the age of 55
A Spanish study points to Tobacco and cholesterol as the main causes of heart attacks
A Spanish study involving twenty hospitals identified tobacco and cholesterol as the main risk factors for heart attacks among young people, even above diseases such as hypertension or diabetes.
The research promoted by the Research Group of the Spanish Society of Cardiology (SEC), was presented at the SEC25 Congress on Cardiovascular Health held in Granada and highlights the relevance of these factors in the first heart attack, defined as those that occur before the age of 55 in men and 65 in women.
The study analyzed more than 500 patients with acute myocardial infarction and obstructive coronary artery disease and found a correlation between those who had a heart attack and those who had one later in life.
According to Hector Buono, a cardiologist at the Hospital 12 de Octobre in Madrid, patients with early heart attacks had a lower prevalence of hypertension (47% versus 66%) and diabetes (18% versus 34%), but they registered a higher rate of active smoking (60% versus 29%) and a family history of coronary heart disease.
Regarding treatment, younger patients tended to have more aggressive heart studies and receive stronger medications to prevent bleeding, although the use of aspirin, medications, and heart failure medications was similar in both groups.
"These results emphasize the identification and management of specific risk factors in young heart attack patients, especially tobacco and cholesterol, to improve their prognosis and quality of life," says Dr. Hector Bueno.
The analysis was performed with data from the GENAMI-Prevention study, which aimed to investigate gender-specific factors in women with acute myocardial infarction and whether gender-related aspects influence patients' adherence to secondary prevention measures.
